Eternal Patrol - Rest your Oar (June 25, 2015)
Herbert Hawes was born July 7 1939 at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital,Lebanon,NH. Those in attendance were Robert Herbert Hawes (father), Nancy Delight Hawes (sister) and Dr John Boardman, Blenda Charlotte Elizabeth
Osberg Hawes Wife and mother. On July 9th 1939 the baby came home to the Etna, NH family farm. Herbert attended the Hanover NH School system. He became a Cub Scout 1948, then progressed to a Boy Scout , then worked his way through the ranks, completing all the requirements to become an Eagle Scout although he did not have his Board of Review While growing up Herbert worked with his Uncle Dick with The Red Ball Express Moving Company. He drove trucks and delivered goods to various locations, mostly for college students. Starting in tenth grade Herb attended Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, GA and graduated in 1958. He worked at the Barre, VT Granite Yard as a general laborer from 1959-1960.
In 1960 Herbert joined the U.S.Navy ,went through boot camp in Great Lakes IL. April 1959-June 1959, and NTCIC “A” School June 1959-Oct 1959. He was assigned to the US Submarine Training Academy and after completing training he went to IC electrician school in Groton Nov 1959 –Jan 1960.
Herbert Married Rea Anne Philbrick in 1960 and had 4 children from this first marriage, Ralph Scott Hawes Feb 18, 1961, Laurie Rea Hawes Feb 20, 1962, Bonnie Jean Hawes Jan 24, 1963 and Kerri AnneHawes Aug 5, 1964.
His first assignment was on the USS Salmon SSR 573 out of San Diego, CA Feb 1960-Jan 1963. Notable deployments included West Pac where he became a Shellback, a member of the Realm of the Golden Dragon and visited various ports in Micronesia, Polynesia and the Oriental Islands. Returning from West Pac and Meadow Lark they went north of the Bering Straits to observe the Russian fleet. He returned to Astoria,OR where he became qualified on submarines and was bounded off the tank tops. At Port Angelus, WA, he received his Dolphins at a Dolphin ceremony with 12 other sailors. He was a hero when a fellow sailor fell off the boat and he jumped in to save him. This sailor’s dad was the owner of Hammer Production and he rewarded Herb with a trip to his mansion and a dinner.
After several operations from the West Coast out of San Diego CA, he was assigned to the USS Tigrone AGSS 419 out of Groton CT Apr -1963-Mar 1965. While on the Tigrone it went thought major overhalls in the brass sonar configurations and did Mediterranean runs, returning home to Groton CT. He was a member of the Submarine School staff from April 1965- June 1965. Then he received orders to
the USS Becuna SS 319 June 1965- Nov 1966 doing Mediterranean runs and local ops. Due to the shortage of Electricians he was transferred to the USS Sea Owl SS 405 Nov 1966 –Apr 1967.
Herbert transferred to Naval Ordinance Test Unit at Patrick Air Force Base in FL April 1967 –July 1967, he completed training and spent time in Vietnam doing special ops. He then transferred for multiple deployments on the USS Robert E Lee SSBN 601 Gold Oct 1967-Sep 1970 maintaining a tactical deterrent defense. When the Robert E Lee was sent to the Yards he was transferred to the USS Thomas Jefferson SSBN 618 Gold Sept 1970 –May 1974.
On December 8 1973 he met Dianne Gloria Aronen and they married on July 6, 1974 at the Congregational Church in Hanover NH. Herb’s best man, Benjamin Bodeford, was a fellow navy friend. Thereception was held at the Keenes Ski Lodge in Hanover NH. Then they had a Canadian honeymoon seeing many places of interest. When he came back he was deployed to the USS Lafayette SSBN 616 Gold Nov 1974-May 1976.
July 22 1976 Herb and Dianne welcomed his twin daughters Jami Katrina Hawes and Elizabeth Ilona Hawes. He was then transferred to the US Naval Submarine school staff Building 88 Engineering advance training, Groton CT May 1976 to Jan 1979. Nov 20 1976 He welcomed Herbert Hiram Hawes III .January 1979 Herb retired from the Navy and then began attending Eastern CT State University and then transferred to Central CT State University where he achieved a degree in Vocational Education.
Herbert was a teacher are Windham Regional Vocational Technical School in Willimantic CT for 17 years teaching electronics. He was an active Scout Leader and then Scout Master with Boy Scout Troop 44 in Brooklyn CT. He went on many Scouting adventures with the troops including a 100 mile hike and canoe trip 50 miles hiked on the Appalachian Trail and 50 miles on the CT River. He was on the Eagle Scout Board of Review, approving and guiding the scouts through the Eagle process. He was also a staff member at two Boy Scout National Jamborees at Fort AP Hill, PA.
In his retirement years he has spent time traveling with his wife Dianne going to reunions with his fellow Navy boat mates including the Sea Owl, Robert E Lee and Becuna reunions. Herbert was inducted into the Holland club in 2010. He is a member of the SubVets in Groton Ct and Boynton Beach FL. He has traveled to Alaska and the Caribbean and up and down the East Coast, spending time in Florida at Disney World and other areas of Florida. They have recently spent time in the nation’s capital seeing the monuments and the Cherry blossoms.. He is a member of St John’s Lutheran church, the Finnish-American Heritage Society, the American Legion and the Elks Club in in both Lebanon, NH and then Danielson, CT Lodge.
Herbert’s family has grown including 5 sons-in-law, 2 daughters-in-law, 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and he was married to Dianne for 40 years
He passed in the early morning hours of June 25, 2015 with his wife, Dianne daughter, Jami and dog, Marley at his side. The family is doing a private graveside ceremony in New Hampshire.
